Safety Spotlight - Cargo Securement

Cargo Related Basic
The most severe point value that a violation can have is 12 points.  That’s 10 for severity with an additional 2 for an OOS.  Having loose dunnage is an easy 12 points on your record.  Remember to secure any material you carry to secure and/or protect cargo.

When was the last time you looked at your straps or chains?

  • Check your chains, straps and ropes for wear and replace them before they place you OOS.

How many tie downs?
  • If there is a headerboard attached to the trailer and it is used to prevent forward motion, you need to have one strap for every 10 feet of cargo.
  • Without a headerboard, two tie downs if the article is over 10 feet and at least one tie down for every 10 feet or fraction thereof.
